Testosterone is the primary endogenous androgen in humans, responsible for the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics, muscle mass, bone density, and red blood cell production. As a pharmaceutical agent, it is typically formulated as an ester prodrug (e.g., testosterone enanthate, cypionate, undecanoate) to improve solubility and prolong its duration of action. These lipophilic esters are slowly released from the injection depot following intramuscular administration, providing sustained physiological levels over days or weeks.
Testosterone is used in androgen replacement therapy for male hypogonadism to restore serum testosterone concentrations. It is also indicated for the treatment of delayed puberty in adolescent males and certain cases of metastatic breast cancer in women. By supporting anabolic and androgenic effects, it helps maintain muscle strength, bone health, libido, and overall well-being in deficient individuals.
